This was step 5 in a photo-guide for how to install pit-fall traps, I'm showing the camera that once you have taken the core to install the pit-fall trap (which by the way is actually just a tennis ball can with holes drilled in the bottom) that you have to plunge the sediment out with this home-made flange + rod.  To be able to do this project we asked a local tennis club to gather tennis ball cans from their members, it was a great collaboration!

For this field experiment we are looking at how crabs may influence salt pan dynamics. Salt pans are poorly drained mud depression without vegetation. If you look closely you can see that both me and my intern (far left) are checking the pit-fall traps (aka tennis ball cans) for crabs and the ones we "caught" we measure and release. #justsloughit

When the tide is high and we deploy these water quality instruments by free diving. All you need is a mask and a snorkel, and of course a wet suit. 58 degree water is no joke. #freediving #waterquality

This little guy here is a Dungeness crab!! Metacarcinus magister, juvenile (young little guys) Dungeness crabs use Elkhorn Slough before they go back out to the big, bad, exposed open coast! You can identify a Dungeness carb versus a red rock crab mainly by their claw color. Dungeness have white claws, red rock crabs have black claws.

After many, MANY failed attempts of keeping crabs in or out of the experimental plots we finally figured out that drilling aluminum roof flashing (who knew?) along the perimeter of cage would keep crabs where we wanted them. The crabs could not get a grip on the flashing, the smooth surface would make them slip back in or out of the cage (depending on if it was a crab removal or crab addition plot). SCIENCE! Using things from Home Depot for something completely other than its original intention. #justsloughit

Sometimes, when he's a good boy my pup Abbott will come in the field with me on subtidal trapping days. Here he's sitting with Tracy Grimes (SDSU Masters Student) while she collects GPS points. Abbott the Slough Dog!

Eelgrass Restoration Process A) On SCUBA dive buddies descend with trowel, shoots in mesh bag, garden stakes and PVC quadrat B) Dive buddy hands “transplanter” Kat Beheshti, shoots (cut to standardized length of 20cm) and garden stakes C) “Underwater gardening”; Kat uses trowel to transplant the eelgrass shoots into the restored plot area D) Depicting what the plot looks like immediately after transplanting E) One year-post transplanting the plots have grown both in terms of canopy height (or shoot length) and plot area (or expansion). This photo was taken at low tide from the surface.

Eelgrass restoration in action! It's just like underwater gardening. Thats a garden trowel in my hand and I'm using garden stakes to secure the eelgrass shoots in the ground. #justsloughit

Field work is almost always a TEAM effort! Here ESNERR staff and volunteers assess the fish community composition in a planned salt marsh restoration site! #justsloughit

Deploying instruments that measure water quality. Sometimes "fancy" science only needs some milk crates and PVC pipe. The goofy face was an effort to make my undergraduate interns laugh since it was hour 1 of 9 that day. Sometimes field work is long and exhausting so you have to have a sense of humor. #justsloughit

Elkhorn slough salt marshes at low tide is a site to be seen. No longer accessible by boat you have to get creative moving field gear, grab some boots or waders and trudge through the slough. The slower you go the more you sink, light quick feet for the win. #justsloughit #justsinkit #muddydays
